CARD DECK SERIES
2023-ONGIONG
In this ongoing series, decks of cards were designed as a participatory workshop activity to address specific communities for client needs. Each deck encourages participants to share stories from the past, and muse on possible futures. The cards can be treated something like an oracle or tarot deck. Paired with a series of prompts and a glossary, these card decks can be used in groups or alone to understand both real and speculative relationships between time, place, emotions, political power, ecology, and advocacy. Over time the thematic context of each deck has expanded from a hyper-local focus to a more general and widely applicable adaption.
FLUSHING WATERWAYS DECK
2023
Using a deck of 52 custom cards the ‘Flushing Waterways Deck’ encourages participants to tell stories related to Flushing Bay and Flushing Creek. Produced for Guardians of Flushing Bay, current staff members incorporate the deck in various ways on walking tours and during other programs.
QUEENS FLOODING DECK
2024
Designed for a collaborative event with Rebuild By Design and New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS), the 62 custom cards in the ‘Queens Flooding Deck’ encourage participants to tell stories related to flooding in Queens, NY.
EXTREME WEATHER DECK
2025
Using a deck of 69 custom cards the ‘Extreme Weather Deck’ encourages participants to tell stories related to their experiences with extreme weather and housing. Created for Rebuild By Design, this deck has been made available to organizations working nationally.
