PASSIVE RECREATION PLATFORM
FLUSHING CREEK, NYC - 2019 / ONGOING

The Passive Recreation Platform (PRP) is a floating research station currently docked in Flushing Creek. Inspired by limited public access to Flushing Creek, PRP, comprised of two 10’x6’ floating docks, creates experimental habitat for both people and marine life. Modeled off Newtown Creek Alliance’s Living Dock, PRP is fashioned with the same milk-crate sized cutouts for native spartina seagrass and oysters, but prioritizes space for humans to engage in passive recreation activities on top of the dock, such as lounging, BBQing, and picnicking. As new developments and policy reshape the coastline, PRP investigates futures that may soon exist along the waterfront. The two docks can be separated, enabling one to be paddled, or tugged by boat around Flushing Creek, allowing participants to experience a variety of environmental conditions. PRP can accommodate roughly 8 individuals.
